Аннотация

The course is designed to help students to develop an intellectual stance - or way of thinking - about qualitative research, as well as to learn specific skills that will support them in enacting this stance in their research. The central goals of the course are a) to enable the student to become a critical reader of qualitative research; b) to assist the student in developing an understanding of the purposes, tools, theoretical assumptions and limitations of the key strands of qualitative research; and c) to prepare the student for further study of, engagement in and use of qualitative research. By the end of the course, the students will familiarise themselves with key approaches to qualitative research, examine and learn to critically engage with qualitative research studies as well as carry out independent qualitative research. Having examined key characteristics of qualitative research, the course will investigate the main approaches to qualitative research , including case study, ethnography, discourse analysis, frame analysis, grounded theory, digital ethnographies and others. In addition to familiarising themselves with key qualitative methods and approaches, the students will develop hands on understanding of basic data handling techniques, such as data storage, coding and presentation. The course does not aim to provide a comprehensive overview of all or most qualitative methods, instead, it provides an in-depth coverage of a few selected methods and approaches in order to illustrate the advantages and limitations of qualitative inquiry as well as to allow students to master some of the basic analytical tools, such as thematic coding and analysis, generalisability, drawing implications, mixed designs and research ethics.
Цель освоения дисциплины

Цель освоения дисциплины

  • Introducing students to qualitative research methods, and discussing the appropriateness of these methods for different areas of research and types of research questions
  • Exposing students to insights in the practice of qualitative research, and encouraging them to experiment in the use of the fundamental methods for qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Gaining an understanding of a qualitative research method, its interrelationship with theory, research questions and research design; the epistemiological foundations that inform qualitative inquiry; the distinction between data collection and data analysis methods, the specificities of qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research designs and the principles of qualitative research design.
  • Gaining factual knowledge of principles of classifying various methods, basic methodology terminology and key traditions in qualitative methodology
  • Learning key techniques for data collection in qualitative research, including observation, interview, and visual data methods and ways that mobile and online data collection methods are extending these fundamental modes
  • Developing specific skills, associated with executing qualitative data analysis, such as designing interview guides, thematic coding and presentation of findings
  • Gaining familiarity with major issues related to qualitative approaches, including epistemology, positionality, subjectivity, reciprocity, access, validity and ethics in qualitative research
Планируемые результаты обучения

Планируемые результаты обучения

  • The class participants will understand and be able to discuss the difference between ethnography as both a research method and approach. The students will familiarise themselves with key names and traditions within the approach as well as their main techniques, advantages and limitations.
  • The students will get themselves familiarised with key ethics issues of qualitative research as well as learn and be able to use specific strategies for assessing and mitigating ethical concerns and risks. The students will also be able to differentiate between various ethical traditions and be able to engage in the debate over ethics in social sciences.
  • The students will learn about key principles of and approaches to data coding, analysis, storage and presentation. The students will be familiar with the main types and brand names of qualitative software and be able to choose one that best suits their research needs.
  • The students will learn about various opportunities for the (re)use of second hand qualitative data and familiarise themselves with and be able to employ the main data gathering techniques.
  • The students will learn the main types of mixed method research designs, their advantages, limitations and uses and be able to pick critically discuss the appropriateness of a particular mixed methods design to specific research questions. The students will also be expected to be able to pick a research design that best fits their own research needs.
  • The students will understand and be able to discuss the difference between case study as a research strategy and a research method. The students will recognise key approaches to case study designs and be able to discuss the appropriateness o the method in relation to their own and other researcher's studies.
  • The students will understand and be able to meaningfully discuss the specificity of qualitative research designs and its key characteristics. The students will familiarise themselves with the main traditions in qualitative research.
  • The students will understand and discuss key approaches to discourse analysis in social sciences as well as learn and be able to employ in their work some discourse analytic techniques.
  • The students will understand and discuss the main theoretical and methodological premises of Frame Analysis as well as learn and be able to employ in their work some its techniques.
  • The students will understand the difference and differentiate between scientific method, theory, research process and research design as well as understand the principles of picking a qualitative research method that fits a particular research question.
