Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is aimed at filling the gap in the complex study of international sanctions in Russian political science: almost everyone knows about the phenomenon of sanctions, while there is no unified standard in the study of sanctions regimes. The syllabus is divided into seven content sections, each of which is designed to teach students the basics of studying sanctions and evaluating their effectiveness. During the course, students will receive comprehensive knowledge about the conceptualization and operationalization of the notion of "sanction", immerse themselves in the existing theoretical framework and basic research approaches in the study of sanctions, master and apply in practice the necessary qualitative and quantitative methods within the framework of existing databases on the impact of sanctions, become familiar with the main cases of application of sanctions in the world. An academic workshop on assessing the effectiveness of the current sanctions against the Russian Federation will serve as a key tool for summarizing the knowledge gained and honing the acquired competencies, during which students will prepare analytical materials and make relevant forecasts. The syllabus satisfies the requirements of interdisciplinarity and practice orientation, while retaining significant fundamental and theoretical parts, which makes it potentially interesting for students who share different research traditions, approaches, and methods.
