Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course covers theoretical and practical issues of International Energy Law as challenging intersection of public and private law, competition and regulatory law and selected key issues of the energy producing, trading, transportation, consumption varied in relation to different energy sources and special features of different energy sources. The course gives understanding of the complexities and interdisciplinary character of the energy sector in international context. The course covers the structure of international energy systems and the usage of different energy resources, environmental and social conditions and limitations of energy producing and consumption.
Learning Objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide students with a formation of knowledge, skills and competencies for forecasting and structuring international relations in the energy sector, to prepare them to deal with different norms of international energy law, including soft law, make research and present legal argumentation on selected key issues of the contemporary international energy law. As the result of the course students will obtain system knowledge in the field of international legal regulation of the energy sector, considering the technical and technological conditions of energy producing and consumption. The study and comparative legal analysis of modern models of cooperation between states within the framework of economic integration unions is of practical value.

Course Contents
- 1. International Energy Law: Introduction. Institutional Framework in International Energy Law.
- 2. Energy Production, Producing and Consumption. Energy Security in Local and Global Energy Systems.
- 3. International Trade in Energy. Energy Markets.
- 4. Transportation and Energy Transit.
- 5. International Energy Investments.
- 6. Recent Trends in Energy Disputes.
- 7. Energy for Sustainable Development. European Green Deal.
Assessment Elements
- Attendance, active participation, and in-class discussionEach student is expected to attend all the sessions having go through and thought about the assigned material, including the questions and any problems in the text/ judgment, podcast, etc. that are assigned, and actively participate in class discussions, ask questions, and make analytical comments about the assignments. Sessions will be structured as a mix of lectures and participative seminars in order to stimulate class discussion: the participants are expected to cover the assigned materials in advance for each class.
- EssayStudents will be offered 4 cases to choose from. 5 days will be provided for the preparation of the final essay. In the essay, students should state and justify their legal position regarding the chosen case. The volume of the essay should not exceed 20,000 printed signs. In the essay each student is expected to demonstrate theoretical and practical understanding of the international regulatory system, selected key issues of the contemporary international energy law.
