Information Exchange and Aggregation in a Social Network With Intolerance
Совместная программа по экономике НИУ ВШЭ и РЭШ
The paper shows a construction and results of a computer simulation using the information exchange model in a one-dimensional information space. Unlike most works in this field, in my model not only opinions but also agents’ relations are changing. A variable of the level of tolerance is introduced. It is the distance between opinions, after which agents break off the relationship. To the questions of the convergence of opinions taken from the work of DeGroot (1974) and of the shift of opinions from the work of Acemoglu, Ozdaglar & ParandehGheibi’s (2010), I add a study of the speed of convergence of opinions. The study shows that increasing the number of agents increases the likelihood of reaching a consensus and reduces the shift in opinions for all levels of tolerance. An increase in the level of tolerance positively influences the probability of convergence of opinions, the speed of convergence, and in the case of consensus, reduces the shift of opinions.
