Transformation of the Romanitas in the Byzantine Imperial Imagery
Прикладная и междисциплинарная история
My research focuses on the transformation of the roman identity or Romanistas of the Eastern Roman emperors or Byzantine emperors through their imperial imagery. I utilise visuals sources such as images of mosaics, coins, seals and illustrated manuscripts to locate the reasons for this transformation. Also, I try to find the reason and the break in the transformation of their representation through specific visual factors such as the beard. I argue that the beard had a significant role to play in imperial portraiture than just being a mere symbol. Along these lines, I try to draw parallels between imperial imagery and political power of the emperor. I also place the importance of the imperial costume in the wider area of power politics and visual culture. I connect my findings in the broader concept of identity politics and imperial power.
