Scalability Analysis of Decentralized Systems Based on Blockchain Consensus Protocol

The goal of this work is to analyze existing approaches to solve the scalability problem of blockchain-based systems and compare their efficiency and security. The research is primarily focused on Ethereum applicable concepts and doesn’t take into consideration solutions proposed or developed for other blockchains such as Bitcoin. The following approaches are examined: Sharding, State Channels, Plasma, Casper. A significant part of the paper is focused on the security of the approaches, i.e., how easily such a system that uses the given solution can be broken, comparing to the Ethereum blockchain in its current state.
