A Model of Antisocial Punishment in Public Good Games
Совместная программа по экономике НИУ ВШЭ и РЭШ
Many experimental studies demonstrate that in public good games not only cooperators punish defectors, but also sometimes free riders punish those who contribute to the public good. In this paper, I construct a model which explains the phenomenon of antisocial punishment from the perspective of reputation. Some agents decide to contribute not because of their inner evaluation of contribution to the public good (altruism), but because they want to look prosocial. In this case contribution signals to others that the player cares about reputation too much and they do not like this. They get the utility from punishment of the player with high reputational concerns. This punishment decreases the reputational benefit from contribution and stimulates players to invest less in order to avoid punishment.
