An Impact of Personality Traits on the Gender Wage Gap
Совместная программа по экономике НИУ ВШЭ и РЭШ
In this research, I investigate whether Big Five personality traits influence men's and women's occupational attainment and whether this fact contributes to explaining gender wage gap in Russia. I find that personality has a considerable effect on the occupational distribution in the ways that differ by gender, which implies that women and men with similar personality traits enter occupations at different wage rates. However, women have lower wages not because male and female employees work in different occupations, but rather because women are discriminated and less paid than men in the same occupation. Finally, the assumption about endogeneity of occupational distribution and accounting for the Big Five personality traits substantially reduces the unexplained part of the gender wage gap. This is the first work, providing evidence on the relationship between Big Five taxonomy and the gender pay gap in Russia.
