‘Vrazhda Narodov”: the Indelible National Identity among Students of the Comintern Schools

Judging from the efforts of the Soviet Union and the Comintern in the 1920s and most of the 1930s, both the national and international elements had an identical priority in the construction of a revolutionary class and a socialist state (or states). This dual, complementary stance was solid because the national struggle to which every nation was entitled, according to Marxist-Leninist theory, was also true for the many “nations” of the USSR. Thus, far from contradictory, the Soviet view of internationalism through the Comintern schools actually meant fostering national cadres, upon whom the local struggle in their respective countries of origin would depend in the future.
