Passenger Air Traffic Modeling Between Russian Regions

This paper is focused on the modelling of the bilateral air traffic between subjects of Russian Federation. 2 gravity models – Basic Model and Extended model – are used to estimate the re-gressions. Panel data of the regular air traffic volume between Russian airports for years 2010, 2014 and 2018 is used for the dependent variable. As the explanatory variables population of the regions and distance between them are used, as well as socio-economic characteristics of the re-gions, such as gross domestic product of the regions, dummies for each route and air and railway fares for the routes. The main results achieved are: the positive dependence of the air traffic vol-ume on the population, GDP, presence of Moscow in the route as one of the points, touristic im-portance of the route and prices of the railway tickets; negative dependence of the air traffic on the airplane tickets prices with supposedly positive effect of the distance (results gained only for 2018).
