Abstract This academic paper deals with possible outcomes and solutions in terms of a smart city. In other words, this master thesis examines how future smart cities can look like and what the requirements are for a sustainable smart city. To illustrate and explain the possible outcome, the author used a deep literature review and conducted four narrative interviews with experts who already gained a lot of experience through their job. The result is given in detail in the chapter results, which is followed by the conclusion in which the main aspects are summed up. This academic paper emphasizes the broadness of the topic and various aspects that are linked with each other and have a reciprocal influence. Therefore, this paper can be seen as a basis for further research and to provide a good overview about the relevant aspects that are linked with the topic smart cities, and how digitalization and sustainability go along with each other. Further, this master thesis provides several good case practices that can help to develop cities all over the world in terms of digitalization and sustainability. Further, it deals with different areas of activities to be more sustainable and use digitalization and technology to show that future cities need to connect sustainability with digitalization in order to be smart.
