Lecture by Nobel Prize laureate in Economics, Professor Eric Maskin "How to Improve Proportional Representation"

On May 18, 2026, a lecture by Chief Research Fellow, Professor Eric Maskin, was held at the International Center for Analysis and Choice of Solutions for students and staff of HSE University.

Topic of the talk: "How to Improve Proportional Representation"

Abstract: Proportional representation is the most common method of electing parliaments in the world today. However, it suffers from a serious flaw. If no single party wins a majority of seats, the government must form from a coalition of parties, and yet that coalition might be very unpopular among citizens. I show how to correct that problem.
