HSE University Becomes Russia’s Only Academic Institution in U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings in Economics and Social Sciences

HSE University has improved its standing in the general U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking. Today, the agency published its 2019 global rankings. HSE University appeared in the Economics and Business ranking for the first time, placing 235. We are also the only Russian institution to make the cut.

HSE University has also climbed in the Social Sciences and Public Health subject ranking, placing 316th. Here, we are still the only Russian academic institution to appear. In Mathematics, HSE University is confidently closing in on the Top-100 after taking 105th place. We also appeared in one more subject ranking for the first time – Physics (706th). In the global ranking, HSE University placed 574th, having moved up almost 80 positions this year.

Moreover, 2019 turned out to be quite a successful year for Russia's 5-100 Project universities: almost all participants have improved their positions in different global rankings. U.S. News Best Global Universities is no exception: Russian universities have not only improved their respective standings, but also enhanced their overall representation as compared to last year. This year, 17 Russian universities have placed on the U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking with 14 of them representing Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100, HSE University included.

U.S. News, an American media corporation publishes both a global university ranking, where institutions are evaluated for all areas of activity, and subject rankings in 28 areas. This year, the ranking includes six new subjects, while the number of universities in the total ranking has increased as well. It now includes 1,500 universities from 81 countries, while last year the results were published for 1,250 academic institutions from a total of 75 countries.
