Ceremony celebrating 100 years anniversary of March 1st Movement in Korea
On March 1st the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Russia held the Ceremony in Lotte hotel in honor of 100 years anniversary of March 1st movement for independence of Korea as well as the scientific conference dedicated to this important event. Students of the Korean department and teachers of the program "Economy and Politics in Asia" were invited to this event. The Head of School of Foreign Regional Studies, the Deputy Academic Supervisor of the program Vera Vishnyakova presented the report on "Declarations of Independence of Korea through a Prism of Values and Estimates" at the scientific conference.
Students of the program for the first time participated in an event of such level and they were left under a big impression of the level of the organization and informational content. They were presented with a unique chance to be introduced to culture and history of the country they study at a highly official level.
March 1st Movement became the first people's movement in Korea nearly 10 years after it was annexed by Japan. Revolts that were not ceasing for several months, were cruelly suppressed by the Japanese authorities, but the voice of the people was heard, and colonialists had to make a compromise. Now March 1st movement is widely covered in textbooks on history of South Korea and it is considered an example of courage of the Korean people in fight for the freedom and independence.
The management of the program expresses gratitude to Embassy of South Korea in the Russian Federation and to the research supervisor of Korea and Japan section of the School of Foreign Regional Studies, the leading researcher of IFES RAS, associate professor E.E. Kim.
