Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course provides a review of international management as a area of theoretical development as well as a field of practice. It comprises the problem areas of globalization, world economy and modern approaches to organisation and business. Main blocks of the course are trends and drivers of globalisation, political, economic and legal environments of international business, business ethics and corporate social responsibility in the modern world, international trade and investment, international business strategy, organisation of international business, functional areas of international management (marketing, R&D ect.) global information systems management. The course includes elements of economics, general management theory, psychology, anthropology and sociology. Business cases are used as application of theoretical concepts. The main objective of the course is to present modern concepts of international management to the students and help them to develop skills in analysis of global business both in terms of its internal functioning and interaction with the different types of environment. The purpose of discipline - acquaint students with principles of international management, to demonstrate the use of marketing tools in the international markets and decision-making in this field.

Learning Objectives

  • The main objective of the course is to present modern concepts of international management to the students and help them to develop skills in analysis of global business both in terms of its internal functioning and interaction with the different types of environment. The purpose of discipline - acquaint students with principles of international management, to demonstrate the use of marketing tools in the international markets and decision-making in this field. The concrete aims of the course are: - disclose modern trends in international management; - consider strategies of international markets' penetration; - identify the specificity of the international business and management; - show methods to apply the principles and techniques of international management in domestic organisations to enhance international cooperation.

  • • Classify basic causes of the globalisation process • Understand the nature of the multinational enterprise (company) • Explain how international factors affect domestic concerns • Apply the principle of the economies of scale to the international business • Explain businesses expansion abroad • Understand the role of modern transportation and information technology in the development of the international business
  • • Use management tools – SWOT-analysis, PESTEL, BCG-matrix, Porter’s 5 forces and others – to international business • Gain the competencies to understand how an organisation can achieve a competitive advantage through its supply chain design • Understand the role of the global competition in the formation of the modern organisational structures • Comprehend how economic cycles determine the international business activity
  • • Conduct an environmental scan to evaluate the impact of world issues on an organisation's international business opportunities • Know factors determining the balance of international trade• Classify types of national economic system • explain regional economic integration and economic and political integration; • Understand the reasons and consequences of the protectionism • Understand the essence and types of the international law
  • • Explain the key legal issues related to businesses operating in other countries; • Explain the main institutions that shape the global marketplace • Evaluate the impact of statutory and regulatory compliance on an organisation's integrative trade initiatives • Understand the ethical consequences of strategic decisions for all stakeholders; • Develop and implement strategies to negotiate effectively within various cultural environments
  • • Address the impact of cultural differences on an organisation's integrative trade initiatives. • Recommend strategies to support principles of corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility and ethics
  • • Use international statistics and manage the problem of information compatibility • Analyze strategic planning processes; create new and improve existing corporate management strategy. • Know types of IT architecture in the international business • Conduct, evaluate and present market research to support an organisation's international business decision-making. • Use CAGE model to assess attractiveness of a national market
  • • Make comparative analysis of the organisational capacity on different national markets • Know basic types of entry strategies: export/import, licensing, franchising, BAT-contract, management contract, turn key contract, part ownership, whole ownership • Distinguish criteria for the choice of an entry strategy • Understand, develop and execute marketing strategies in the current and future international commercial environment
  • • Understand the peculiarities of subsidiaries’ creation – greenfield model of acquisitions • Develop and present an international marketing plan for a subsidiary • Evaluate sales strategies that support an organisation's integrative mechanisms • Identify and interpret relevant international financial documents, and evaluate financial strategies that support an organisation's integration
  • • Be able to identify the types of organisational structure in the multinational enterprise • De able to elaborate the rational structure for a subsidiary • Know types and methods of control and monitoring in the international business • Understand of the peculiarities of expatriates’ carrier • Analyze the impact of an organisation's general strategy on its human resources management strategies, policies and practices.
  • • Be able to use different methods to select and assess personnel in subsidiaries • Understand the reasons and aims of the compensation police in the multinational enterprise • Comprehend the role and usefulness of non-monetary incentives in the international business • Use outsourcing to raise the international business efficiency • Be aware of how technologies and innovations shape organisations, the market, society, and the environment
