Marcel Salyev, who is responsible for Business Strategy Management at Otkritie Bank’s Business Development Strategy Department, talks about the qualities that distinguish talented employees, why Otkritie sees ICEF as a provider of talent, and how financial institutions increase their cooperation with universities.

Georgy Brutyan joined Otkritie Bank as a strategic analyst in 2018 when the bank was experiencing fundamental changes. Currently its Managing Director for Strategy and Business Development, Georgy leads the projects to enhance the achieved structural change. The HSE University has summed up the results of its Student Research Paper Competition-2022, held among students and graduates. For the representatives of ICEF, this contest was yet another proof of their excellent performance. Four won prizes as best finance and economics papers, three more received an honourable mention. This year’s competition among participants was greater than ever: since 2021 the authors of the winning papers receive a special scholarship from HSE for exceptional academic achievements.

The pre-New Year period traditionally brings together ICEF alumni for what is known as Unconference. Offering a unique experience, unfolded from onstage (or Zoom) by the alumni, this year’s Unconference featured un-PowerPoints telling all the truth about job search and how “failure” has become a norm, what mobile games industry is really all about and why big data is just hype.

Card game masters claim that careful analysis of the opponent’s combinations is a key to winning, enabled by the key capabilities in game theory data science. Anastasia Erastova, currently a data scientist at BNP Paribas' New York office, graduated in 2018 from ICEF BSc with honors and the title of Russia’s Bridge Vice-Champion. In her interview to Success Builder Anastasia explains why math and card games are entwined, what makes studying next door to Wall Street beneficial, and how mathematics students can get a work visa for the USA.

Martsella Davitaya is an ICEF 2017 BSc programme graduate who received first class degrees from both HSE and University of London. Right after her BSc she entered a PhD programme at Columbia University (USA), where she is currently studying, doing research and teaching. In the interview she spoke about her career choices, her impressions of studying at Columbia and her future plans.

Yury Kiselev graduated from ICEF in 2006, and after that entered the MSc programme at Cass Business School in London – one of the best business schools. Now Yury is a Director at Société Générale Bank (London office) and Head of Central and Eastern Europe, CIS & Russia on the international Debt Capital Markets. In this interview he told us what ‘bonus’ ICEF confers on its graduates, how to recognize your true purpose and why goals should be ‘over the top’.

Vladimir Mukharlyamov enrolled at ICEF after his success in the All Russian Olympiads in Economics and Entrepreneurship. After graduating from ICEF BSc in 2008 he continued studies on the MSc programme in Finance and Economics at the London School of Economics. On completion of his MSc Vladimir started a PhD in Economics at Harvard University. Since 2016 he has worked as an Assistant Professor of Finance at Georgetown University. His research has been published in The Journal of Financial Economics and The Review of Financial Studies. Vladimir is a winner of Golden HSE Award in the Alumni Success category.
