Round table “Academic cultures in higher education: values, ethics, practices”

The 1 st June on HSE and University of London Parallel Degree Programme in International Relations, the round table was held, which was devoted to issues of academic culture and different experience in education process in the USA and Russia.

Northeastern University is a private research university in Boston, established in 1898. It offers a cooperative education, in which classes are integrated with professional experience on seven continents and a comprehensive study abroad. By the way, the University is categorized as an R1 institution (Doctoral Universities: Highest Research Activity) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The round table started with speech of Associate Professor of School of Foreign Languages of HSE Ekaterina Talalakina. She presented the new project «Academic values of HSE», which had been prepared by alumni of personnel reserve for 25 th anniversary of HSE. The project has an online course format. The course discloses the provisions of Statement of Values of HSE and it is available for research fellows and professors of the University. Due to specialization of participants, the greatest interest was caused by the motive of academic freedom and political neutrality in the academic sphere.

After that participants discussed useful practices. American students presented the organization of education in the United States, and HSE students responded with narration about shaping of culture and student’s community in HSE.

The Assistant Professor Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs Andrei Krickovic was the moderator of the event. The Junior Research Fellow of CCEIS Dmitry Novikov, Academic Supervisor of the Educational Track Anderei Skriba, the Professor of history in Northeastern University Harlow Robinson, and PhD of world history Feruza Aripova also participated in the discussion.

According to students, the event was very interesting and dynamic. Moreover, this international cooperation was very useful for them.
