Our students at the UN Model (University of New York in Abu Dhabi)

Our students Filip Lazarev, Polina Butko, Kartikei Negi and Kristina Erokhina share their experience and impressions of participating in the UN Model (University of New York in Abu Dhabi).

The trip to the United Arab Emirates as a member of Russian delegation to the CWMUN 2017 was marvelous and unforgettable. I fell in love with this country the moment I stepped out of the plane. The sightseeing alone was breathtaking: modern skyscrapers, luxury cars, huge roads without any traffic jams, and, most importantly - the great team, which surrounded me the whole trip. I was very glad to be accompanied by clever, competent and experienced people. It was also very useful for me to meet the local students and exchange of views of a variety of subjects.

This internship as a young UN representative granted me a lot of benefits, which would be useful in my future career. I found out what it means to resolve international conflicts, make nation-wide alliances and how to act in urgent situations. From our meeting with the Russian Federation’s ambassador in UAE, I received information about the ambassador’s job: its pros and cons, the responsibilities one should take to maintain peaceful relationships between two countries. I am very grateful to the organizers of this trip, which boosted my confidence in the participation in diplomatic debates and would be happy to participate in again  and support the idea of creating MUN inside the walls of our University.

To say that this trip has impressed me greatly is just to say nothing. It has really influenced my outlook. I was overwhelmed by the fact that in our routine world there are still people who are highly educated and spiritual. I spent several absolutely happy days when every participant had a chance to imagine himself a representative of any of the world. We learned to communicate in the framework of diplomatic etiquette and to work as a team. Talented people who think not only about everyday students' problems shared their ideas and experience with me. At that very moment we became really true friends without any national prejudices, ignoring state boarders, language, cultural and age differences. UN Model is a wonderful experience which will help me in my future education. It's a unique opportunity for self-realization, for obtaining oratorical skills and also for overcoming the fear of public presentations. I am really happy to have had an opportunity to take part in this event. I hope it was not the last time that our students had a chance to represent our university abroad.

I am absolutely sure that this trip will remain forever in my memory, since for me it was the first experience of participation in such conferences. I was sincerely amazed at the scale and high level of organization of this event. The organizers of the model managed to convey with an unprecedented accuracy the atmosphere and spirit prevailing in the UN.

It seems to me important and necessary to participate in such events, because my future profession, closely connected with international relations, requires not only a significant amount of academic knowledge, but also a certain experience of practical diplomacy. It was precisely this opportunity that was provided to us by the diplomatic association that organized this UN youth model, the largest in the Middle East. It is worth saying that we received not only a good practice of public speaking on specialized foreign policy issues in front of a large audience, but also learned the art of debating and defending our point of view in the face of the world community, represented by students from all over the world. It is also impossible to underestimate the experience we have gained through communicating with students from the world's leading universities. In addition to intensive cultural exchange and establishment of important contacts, we also learned how to find common language with each other, make compromises, while continuing defending our point of view, and eventually come to a consensus.

Of course, a lot of useful information was given to us by a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to the UAE. Meeting with an experienced diplomat of such level has enabled us to delve into the subtleties of our future profession. Thanks to his careful analysis of the situation in the Middle East, I revised some views on certain events and phenomena related to this significant for the world community region.

In general, the trip has surpassed all my expectations, and I'm looking forward to taking part in the UN model in New York, which will be held in April.

Kartikei Negi

It was my first experience in such kind of event and I think that it will be really useful not only for the future diplomats but also for those who wanted to somehow connect his or her life with the politics. During these Sessions I learned on my own experience how the UN meetings are organized, when and how speaking process is made. It gave me opportunity in working with people from other countries.

I enjoyed these days of working among people from different nations, it really improved my possibilities of working in formal atmosphere.

Before the Committee Sessions we visited Russian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. We had an opportunity to meet the Ambassador and ask him questions in which we were interested in. It was really interesting and useful for us to learn about the life of the Ambassador in this country.
