We invite to the open lecture by David S. Foglesong «The American Global Mission and the Demonization of Russia»

David Foglesong is a professor of history at the Rutgers University (The State University of New Jersey). He’s an author of the book «The American Mission and the “Evil Empire”: The Crusade for a “Free Russia” Since 1881».

International Laboratory of World Order Studies and New Regionalism invites you on March 29 at 5 pm to visit an open lecture by David S. Foglesong «The American Global Mission and the Demonization of Russia».

As relations between the United States and Russia have deteriorated into a “new Cold War,” American-Russian mutual demonization has become as intense as it was during the worst phases of the Cold War. But American demonization of Russia as an “evil empire” did not begin in the post-1945 Cold War or even when Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in 1917. Instead, as David Foglesong will show, American vilification of Russian rulers first developed in the last decades of the tsarist autocracy, at the same time as the United States emerged as a world power and Americans increasingly enlisted in a crusade for a “free Russia.” This lecture will describe the phases in the history of American messianic and demonic views of Russia since 1881. It also will analyze the connections between the demonization of Russia and the affirmation of an American global mission that continue to influence American attitudes today.

The lecture will be held on March 29, 5 pm
Address: 17 Malaya Ordinka St., room. 106
The working language is English.
