Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course “Practical Course of the English Language” is designed for the first-year students of the Undergaduate Programme “Foreign Languages and Cross-cultural Communication” and is comprised by three aspects:“Practice of Oral and Written Speech”, "Grammar" and "Phonetics". The main aim of the course is to develop students’ communicative competence in all skills and aspects at B2+/C1 levels, with the elements of C2 level, and prepare students to use English as a means of professional communication.

  • The principle goal is formation of professional and academic competencies (including instrumental and social and personal competencies), defined in the Education Standard of HSE in the field of study 45.03.02 “Linguistics”. The main goal is the development of foreign language communicative competence, including subcompetences: linguistic competence, sociolinguistic competence, discursive competence, strategic competence, sociocultural competence, social competence.

  • know vocabulary items of B2+ and vocabulary items of C1, with the elements of C2 level used for the production of oral and written speech on the topics specified in the programme of the discipline
  • know the main types of listening and the strategies specific to different listening types
  • know the strategies of taking notes to develop note-taking skills
  • know the types of dictionaries (collocation dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms, phraseology dictionaries) and their importance in a learning process
  • use target vocabulary items to produce oral and written speech on a topic specified in the unit
  • choose and use different reading strategies
  • use a text as a basis for further speech production
  • write 100-120 words paragraphs
  • know the criteria for the acquisition of the vocabulary items
  • take part in the discussions on the topics related to the unit of the programme

  • to know the grammatical categories of the verb;
  • to know the none verbal forms of the verb and their functions in a sentence;
  • to differentiate the use of infinitive and gerund;

  • to have the skills to choose and use various grammatical patterns and techniques in the translation from/to the native/target language to achieve the ultimate communicative effect considering the character of the translated text

  • Unit 1. Practical Grammar. Morphology. Finite Verbs. Tenses. Passive Voice
    Tenses (Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous).
  • Unit 2. Practical Grammar. None-finite Verbs.
    None-finite Verbs (Infinitive, Gerund, Complex Subject, Complex Object, Participle I, Participle II, Gerundial and Half-gerundial Complexes).
  • Unit 3. Practical Grammar. Modal Verbs. Oblique Moods. Noun.
    Modal Verbs (Can, May, Must, Be, Have to, Ought to, Need, Should, Shall, Would, Will). Oblique Moods (Subjunctive, Conditional). Noun (Number, Gender, Case).
  • Unit 4. Practical Grammar. Article. Adjective. Pronoun.
    Article (with Proper Names, Uncountable Nouns, Degree Words, Descriptive and Limiting Attributes). Adjective (Degrees of Comparison, Intensifiers of the Degrees, Substantivization). Pronoun (12 Classes).
  • Topic 1. Practical course of the first foreign language (1st year). Phonetics. Introductory-correction course.
    Organs of speech and their functions. Vowels and consonants. Phonetic phenomena. Peculiarities of the articulatory basis of the English language. Breathing and articulatory exercises. Phonetic transcription. Intonation on the staves.
  • Topic 2. Practical course of the first foreign language (1st year). Phonetics. Articulation of English vowels and consonants.
    Pronunciation of vowels. Pronunciation of consonants. Aspiration. Assimilation. Reduction. Elision. Nasal plosion. Lateral plosion. Loss of plosion. Linking [r]. Sounds in connected speech. Developing pronunciation skills.
  • Topic 3. Practical course of the first foreign language (1st year). Phonetics. Word stress. Syllable division.
    Rules of syllable division. Degrees of word stress. Placement of word stress. Word stress in compound words. Rhythm in English.
  • Topic 4. Practical course of the first foreign language (1st year). Phonetics. Intonation.
    Basic intonation patterns in English and intonation skills. Intonation patterns of different communicative sentence types. Intonation of syntactic structures. Skills of intonational realization of emotional-modal attitude and in accordance with communicative context.
  • Topic 5. Practical course of the first foreign language (1st year). Phonetics. Phonostylistic differentiation of oral discourse.
    Phonostylistic analysis of oral discourse. Development of phonetic reading skills. Development of phonetic speaking skills (in the form of monologue and dialogue). Colloquial phonetic style. Informational phonetic style.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Practice of Speech
    The Current Grade in Practice of Speech consists of the following elements: О pr.o.sp. = 0,05*О contact work + 0,05*О analytical quiz + 0,05*О creative task + 0,1*О test.Contact work which stands for the student’s work in class comprised by the following constituent parts: attendance, active classroom participation, homework completion. The maximum grade for this type of assessment is 3. To calculate the final grade for this type of assessment a percentage formula is applied: О CW = О cumulative * 10/О max. points. 2) Analytical tests aimed at the control of new knowledge and skills formation, timely correction of reaching strategies which include lexical tests (1-5 tests each unit). The maximum grade for this type of assessment is 10. To calculate the final (cumulative) grade for this type of assessment the following formula is applied: О analytical quiz = (О analytical quiz 1 + О analytical quiz 2 + …….)/О total number. 3) Creative activities: monologues, debates, discussions, role-plays, round-table discussions, projects, written products. The maximum grade for this type of assessment is 10. To calculate the final (cumulative) grade for this type of assessment the following formula is applied: О creative test = (О creative test 1 + О creative test 2 + …….)/О total number. 4) Final tests on each unit which may include the following aspects: lexical test, reading/listening comprehension activities, speaking products (monologues, discussions), written products (paragraphs, essays). The maximum grade for this type of assessment is 10. To calculate the final (cumulative) grade for this type of assessment the following formula is applied: О test = (О lexical test + О monologue + …….)/О total number.
  • non-blocking Grammar
    The ongoing assessment in Grammar is calculated according to the formula: О = 0,05*Оtests + 0,05*Оcontact work + 0,05*ОLMS + 0,1*Оfinal test. The ongoing assessment (ОGrammar) is based on the following elements of control: 1) tests (О test = (О test 1 + О test 2 + …….) / О number of tests); 2) active contact work in class 3) tests in LMS; 4) final tests. At the end of each module the teacher indicates the date of deadline for checking the tests in LMS. If the tasks have not been completed by this date, the grades will be counted off, e.g. if a student got 7 out of 10-scale grading system but 5 compulsory tests were not done then the grade is 2 (7-5).
  • non-blocking Phonetics
    The grade for Phonetics includes result of the ongoing control in the following way: Ot.g.= 0.05* Оongoing + 0,05* Оaud + 0,1* Оtest. Where Oongoing is calculated as a sum of all forms of the ongoing control provisioned in the GSP (General Study Plan) divided by their number: Oongoing = ∑ O test n /n.The teacher assesses the students` work during the classes: participation in dialogues and discussions, monologues and presentations, role-plays, written tasks fulfillment. The teacher assesses students` independent work in terms of homework completion of extensive reading and listening tasks. The grades for these two types of activities are recorded in the register (decimal system 0-10), and the mean is calculated at the end of the year – Oaud.
  • non-blocking Exam Practice of Speech
    In Module 2, Grammar examination is taken on the examination week. Practice of Speech and Phonetics final control tasks are taken in the form of written and/or oral tests at the last lesson. In Module 4, Phonetics examination is taken on the examination week. Practice of Speech teacher rates students for Modules 1-4 considering the Module Grade results in Grammar and Phonetics, which should be personally provided by the teachers of the corresponding aspects. In Module 3, Practice of Speech examination is taken on the examination week. The exam consists of two parts. A written part includes a lexical test. There are 40 questions in the test. The grade is calculated according to the following scale: 40p. – 10; 38-39p. – 9; 35-37p. – 8; 32-34p. – 7; 29-31p. – 6; 25-28p. – 5; 20-24p. – 4;15-20p. – 3; 10-14p. – 2; 4-9p. – 1; 0-3p. –0. An oral part includes 3 tasks: monologues, questions and answers, discussions. The Exam Grade is calculated according to the following formula - G exam= (G lexical test + G monologue+G questions/answers+G discussion)/4. Экзамен состоит из письменной части и устной части. Письменная часть экзамена (лексический тест) проводится с использованием асинхронного прокторинга. Письменная часть экзамена проводится на платформе Moodle (https://hse.student.examus.net). К экзамену необходимо подключиться за 15 минут до начала. На платформе Экзамус доступно тестирование системы. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять следующим требованиям: https://elearning.hse.ru/data/2020/05/07/1544135594/Технические%20требования%20к%20ПК%20студента.pdf. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: заранее зайти на платформу прокторинга, провести тест системы, включить камеру и микрофон, подтвердить личность. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: вступать в разговоры с третьими лицами (в социальных сетях или приложениях для обмена мгновенными сообщениями и видео (мессенджеры), с людьми в комнате), использовать справочные материалы (книги, шпаргалки), любые гаджеты (сотовые телефоны, пейджеры, калькуляторы, планшеты), списывать. Во время экзамена студентам разрешено: пользоваться собственными письменными заметками, сделанными во время экзамена (не более одного листа A4). Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается прерывание связи до 5 минут. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается прерывание связи 5 минут и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи аналогична процедуре сдачи. Устная часть экзамена (монологи, вопросы/ответы, дискуссии) проводится на платформе MS Teams или Zoom. К экзамену на указанной преподавателем платформе необходимо подключиться согласно расписанию ответов, высланному преподавателем на корпоративные почты студентов накануне экзамена. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: наличие рабочей камеры и микрофона, поддержка MS Teams/Zoom. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: явиться на экзамен за 10 минут до начала, при ответе включить камеру и микрофон, показать своё рабочее место. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: выключать камеру, вступать в разговоры с третьими лицами (в социальных сетях или приложениях для обмена мгновенными сообщениями и видео (мессенджеры), с людьми в комнате), использовать справочные материалы (книги, шпаргалки, списки слов), любые гаджеты (сотовые телефоны, пейджеры, калькуляторы, планшеты), списывать. Во время экзамена студентам разрешено: пользоваться собственными письменными заметками, сделанными во время экзамена (не более одного листа A4). Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение связи менее 2 минут. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение 2 минуты и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи аналогична процедуре сдачи.

    Экзамен проводится в устной форме. Экзамен проводится на платформе MS Teams. К экзамену необходимо подключиться за 10 минут до начала. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: наличие рабочей камеры и микрофона. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: явиться на экзамен согласно точному расписанию, при ответе включить камеру и микрофон. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: выключать камеру, пользоваться конспектами и подсказками. Во время экзамена студентам разрешено: делать черновые записи при подготовке к устному ответу. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена 15-20 мин. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается более 20 минут. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи аналогична процедуре сдачи и проводится в устной форме.
