HSE Jessup Team Is the Finalist of the Jessup Russian Championship

On 2 February 2020, MGIMO hosted the Final Round of the Russian National Championship of the Jessup Competition, one of the most prestigious law competitions globally. The HSE University team (Moscow) appeared in the Final Round of the National Championshipfor the first time since 2017, and came as a Russian Runner-Up, after the champions of this year, the MGIMO team.

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Competition was founded in 1959 and has been held annually since then as a moot court competition touching upon a fictitious inter-state case brought before the International Court of Justice. Currently, Jessup Competition is one of the most famous moot court competitions in the world. More than 3,000 law students from more than 700 universities and 100 countries worldwide annually participate in this game.


This year more than 30 teams participated in the Russian National Championship of the Jessup, yet only four of them are going to compete at the international rounds in Washington. D.C. representing Russia: the teams from MGIMO, HSE University (Moscow), Saint-Petersburg State University and Lomonosov Moscow State University. The 2020 Jessup problem addresses issues of multi-fora international litigation, the accountability of heads of State for war crimes, killer robots, and a wall.
HSE Jessup Team is represented by: Matvey Tarasov (1st year master’s), Adam Nalgiev (2nd year master’s), Elena Naumova (2nd year master’s), Daria Bukreeva (3rd year bachelor) and Alexander Kozhedub (3rd year bachelor). Team’s coaches are: Gayane Gulyan (2018 alumna), Emil Shagiakhmetov (2014 alumnus), и Anastasia Rozeeva (2016 alumna).

In addition to coming as a Russian National Runner-Up, HSE has also received an award for excellence in writing a memorandum (3rd place). Team’s oralists—Adam Nalgiev and Matvey Tarasov—both entered top-5 of the Russian Best Oralists ranking.

Jessup International Rounds will take place in Washington D.C. this April. Congratulations to the Finalists and best of luck at the international rounds!
