Additional options and online courses for students

University-wide optional courses

All students have access to courses on data science methods and tools. Every year, students have the opportunity to sign up for dozens of university-wide optional courses and continuing education programmes, which help them to broaden their overall knowledge in this field, or focus on a specific product or area instead.

Students may take any optional course from the list offered at HSE University. Optional courses are taught in addition to a degree programme’s curriculum and are also available to other learners irrespective of their age and education level. The HSE Faculty of Computer Science offers its own optional courses hosted by such leading IT companies as Yandex, SAS, Parallels, JetBrains, etc.

Please follow this link for a full list of University-wide courses offered at HSE University.

Online courses

HSE University actively introduces new formats of learning and teaching, such as distance education, blended learning and eLearning technologies. From 2014 HSE University hosts its massive open online courses at Coursera. In 2015, HSE University together with 7 other leading Russian universities initiated a project aimed to create a National Open Education Platform and now the University has produced more than 100 Russian-taught courses for this platform.

There are 3 English-taught Specializations on Data Science launched by HSE University on Coursera.

This specialization gives an introduction to deep learning, reinforcement learning, natural language understanding, computer vision and Bayesian methods. Top Kaggle machine learning practitioners and CERN scientists will share their experience of solving real-world problems and help you to fill the gaps between theory and practice. Upon completion of 7 courses you will be able to apply modern machine learning methods in enterprise and understand the caveats of real-world data and settings.
This specialization covers the basic notions and results (combinatorics, graphs, probability, number theory) that are universally needed. To deliver techniques and ideas in discrete mathematics to the learner it extensively use interactive puzzles specially created for this specialization. To bring the learners experience closer to IT-applications the specialization incorporates programming examples, problems and projects in our courses.
This specialization is a mix of theory and practice: you will learn algorithmic techniques for solving various computational problems and will implement about 100 algorithmic coding problems in a programming language of your choice. It also contains two real-world projects. No other online course in Algorithms even comes close to offering you a wealth of programming challenges that you may face at your next job interview. But this specialization does.
