Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is a part of M.Sc. program in “Applied Social Psychology”. In this course, students will acquaint with the main methodological questions of cross-cultural research. The course leads students through the questions that they should take into account while planning and conducting cross-cultural research: sampling, equivalence and bias, translation issues, involving quantitative and qualitative methods, interpretations of results.

  • The course aims to review the integral principal steps taken during a psychological research study and to provide students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to plan and conduct cross-cultural research.

  • Know sources of bias in cross-cultural studies

  • Know the main types of mixed method research designs
  • Know the main technics used in test translation and adaptation
  • Can conduct a cognitive interview for test adaptation
  • Understand cultural variability in several common survey response styles: socially desirable responding (SDR), acquiescent response style (ARS), and extreme response style (ERS)
  • Understand what is confirmatory factor analysis
  • Understand the benefits of CFA for cross-cultural studies
  • Know the standards of model fit indices
  • Know the main steps in running CFA
  • Can use CFA for testing convergent and divergent validity of measures
  • Can report results of analysis according to current standards in the cross-cultural research literature

The written report on the results of the measurement adaptation, translated from English. Homework 2/ The written report on the invariance testing of the measure of any psychological concept, measured with the same instrument in different countries (using available databases)
