Course Syllabus

Abstract

Title of the course: Modern History of Korea & China. This course will provide students with a foundation in modern history of in Korean and China. Topics for the course will include but are not limited to European and American contacts with Asia, the decline and partition of China, Western and Japanese Imperialism in Asia, communism in China, and the Korean War particularly in the context of East Asia geopolitics. Students will also explore recent socio-economic development in Korea and China, such as reform policies in post-socialist China and economic development democratization in South Korea.

  • This course is designed to provide students with the historical background of modern Korea and China in terms of making a modern nation-state from the late 19th century to 20th century.

  • Students will understand the history of modern Korea and China in the context of East Asia’s world order.
  • Students will gain a comparative perspective on Korea and China with other Asian states.
  • Students will be able to discuss the shared historical experiences in the region of Asia.
