Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course discusses the theoretical background of digital humanities and provides at the same time opportunities for methodological reflections and ̳hands-on‘ experience regarding the proper planning and organisation of DH research projects. The course has three thematic axes: (1) It discusses focus concepts and debates that shaped the self-understanding of the humanities in modernity: the role of positivism in the emergence of humanities in the 19thcentury, the concept of Geisteswissenschaftenas being directed against positivist notions of science, humanities and our understanding of ̳culture‘.(2) It provides a very general overview of humanist scholarly practices throughout history. (3) It investigates research practices in the digital humanities. The first seminars of the course are dedicated to classroom discussions that help students to formulate their own outlook on digital humanities practices. The remaining seminars provide a tutorial on the use of the TaDiRAH taxonomy of DH research practices for planning a DH-related project and allow students to connect the material discussed in the lectures to their own research by creating a project portfolio.
