The proposed course introduces a more than millenial epoch in the history of Greater Iran and the adjacent territories of Western and Central Asia going from the Arab invasion in mid - late 7th century to the beginning of the colonial and imperial penetration of the region by the West (European powers and Russia) at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It tackles key problems of socioeconomic, military, political, cultural and intellectual evolution of the Irano-Islamic world, combining theory (analysis of climatic, demographic, ethnocultural factors) and fact (detailed case studies of separate events, analysis of concrete processes and phaenomena as described in primary and secondary sources), consisting of lectures discussing in general lines separate groups of problems, and seminars acquainting the students with illustrative text samples take from sources representing all main categories of written production in Classical Persian (narrative, documentary, epigraphic, both in prose and verse).
