Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course “The Manager's Toolkit: A Practical Guide to Managing People at Work” is taught on educational online platform “Coursera.org”, https://ru.coursera.org/learn/people-management, London University. This course will give students a practical guide to managing people at work. It does not matter whether you are a first time manager in a shop or a middle manager in an office environment; the same skills apply to every work place. In the course students will engage with some HR theories and then see how they translate into every day working life.
Learning Objectives
- The objective of this course is to equip learners with knowledge how to choose a suitable employee, to motivate and appraise a team, to manage conflict in the work place and to lead and make decision on a day to day basis.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Understand how to conduct an interview
- Be able to assess the interview method in terms of suitability for selecting new members of staff
- Understand the role of the leader in the organization
- Understand the role of well-functioning performance management system in the organization
- To gain knowledge about pay in terms of motivation
- Understand how to manage conflicts and whether they are always bad
Course Contents
- Week 1. IntroductionThe first week gives students a chance to do some preparatory reading which will give them a good general overview of the subject area.
- Week 2. InterviewsThis week students are focusing on the role of the interview, how to conduct a good interview as well as looking at options to the interview and discussing whether it is the best method of selecting new members of staff.
- Week 3. Leadership and Decision makingThis week students are looking at the role of the leader in the organization and how it is possible to improve decision making
- Week 4. Performance ManagementThis week learners are looking at how a well designed performance management system can help both the employee and the organization.
- Week 5. Pay as a motivatorThis week learners are looking at how important pay is as a motivator and the implications of this.
- Week 6. Managing conflict at workThis week students are looking at the causes of conflict and how to manage it for a positive outcome.

- Final examЭкзамен проводится в устной форме (опрос по материалам курса). Экзамен проводится на платформе Zoom (www.zoom.us). К экзамену необходимо подключиться согласно расписанию ответов, высланному преподавателем на корпоративные почты студентов накануне экзамена. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: наличие рабочей камеры и микрофона, поддержка Zoom. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: поставить на аватар свою фотографию, явиться на экзамен согласно точному расписанию, при ответе включить камеру и микрофон. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: выключать камеру, пользоваться конспектами и подсказками. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение связи менее минуты. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение минута и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи подразумевает использование усложненных заданий.
