Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course focuses on an overview of economic development in Southeast Asia during the 20th and early 21st centuries, and looks into the major economic challenges the region is facing today. Particular attention is paid to the historical evolution of agriculture in the development of Southeast Asia and its consequences for economic growth.

Learning Objectives

• Assess the impact of colonialism and other factors that determined the post-WWII growth in the South East Asian countries
• Compare the policies adopted in different countries to accelerate industrialization and agricultural development
• Analyze trends in income distribution and poverty eradication and the effectiveness of poverty alleviation policies
• Analyze the evolution of regional trade and investment and evaluate the opportunities and challenges associated to the development of the ASEAN Economic Community

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Students will be able to learn the basics of the economic structure of Southeast Asia
• Students will be able to reproduce data on three sectors of the economy in Southeast Asia
• Students will be able to analyze the situation in the labor and finance markets in Southeast Asia
• Students will be able to analyze and reproduce the problems faced by the countries of Southeast Asia
