Abstract

This course is designed for MA students enrolled in the postgraduate programme “Language Policy in the Context of Ethnocultural Diversity”. Globalization processes are intrinsically linked to the frequent movement of people belonging to different cultural traditions, which in turn contributes to the development of linguistic diversity. This is especially noticeable in large metropolitan areas and is reflected in various aspects of city life. In this course we will examine one of the aspects of a multilingual city - a language practice carried out in the workplace. The modern place of work in transnational corporations has long become international and multilingual (Angouri, 2014). It is important to note that this course will focus on various aspects of language policy and the nature of its implementation in transnational corporations. We will also analyze several cases in which we will consider the impact of language ideologies as well as language commodification on the multilingual language behavior of groups in the workplace in countries such as the UK, Denmark, the Scandinavian countries, Australia.
