Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course prepares students for doing research work in linguistics and presenting its results in an academic community. The course gives students a clear idea of the structure of linguistic research, its theory and methodological basis, the population and hierarchy of the methods used, and principles of practical material selection. The course also seeks to give practical application to the knowledge obtained from the basic linguistic disciplines. As the final paper is written and presented in English, the students are familiarised with procedures, models and principles of academic writing, various aspects of rhetoric and composition, conventions of academic communication, etc. Among the “can dos” we aim to achieve are: •The ability to work in a research team •The effective use of technologies of generating ides •Well-developed skills of creating coherent and logically organised texts of various genres (analytical reviews, articles, reports, course paper synopsis, etc.) •The ability to critically evaluate texts from the point of view of their academic literacy •The ability to detect and correct complex syntactic and logical errors •The ability to participate in academic debates •The ability to deliver efficient presentations

  • Is able to distinguish between natural sciences and humanities paradigms, quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Determines the type of study
  • Is able to formulate a research problem, hypothesis, define research objectives and optimal methods for their solution
  • Is able to create an academic text that demonstrates proficiency in linguistic and metalinguistic competencies (logic, analysis, critical thinking, objectivity, etc.)
  • Demonstrates skills in conducting academic discussions in English
  • Is able to choose an effective way to present the project of his research
  • Is able to carry out competent linguistic analysis of the text at all levels.

  • Methodology of scientific knowledge. Culture, structure and literature: the boundaries of scientific and non-scientific
    1. Principles and structure of scientific research. 2. Methodological foundations of research in Linguistics. 3. Selection and substantiation of the research topic.
  • Academic text as a system: from posing a research question to a finished product
    1. Writing as a process, product and practice. 2. Technologies for organizing the writing process and generating ideas. 3. Organization of the whole text. 4. Logical and syntactic problems of academic and scientific text
  • Oral communication in an academic environment (conferences, seminars, speeches, discussions)
    1. Features of oral communication in the academic environment. 2. Genres of oral academic communication. 3. Adaptation of the written text to the oral presentation. 4. Presentation of research results in English. 5. Organization of the text. Non-verbal behavior. 6. Slides. 7. Keeping the audience's attention.
  • Linguistic methods of text research: theory and practice
    1. Structuralism and levels of language. 2. Means of representing the author's intention and achieving textual cohesion at all levels: from phonetic units to supertext; 3. Forms of presentation of authorship in fictional and non-fictional text; 4. Information content of the text; 5. The depth of reading the text; 6. Informational, structural and stylistic characteristics of the text; 7. Style and sublanguage of a text as a means of realizing its constructive idea; 8. Methods and techniques of semantic-cognitive description of concepts, verbally represented in the text; 9. Modeling concepts; 10. Cognitive metaphor as a means of forming a concept; metaphorical models; semantic description of the metaphor; 11. The linguistic personality presented in the text, aspects of its analysis; component analysis; seminal analysis, interpretive semantics; 12. The concept of supertext as an invariant for a group of texts and as a representative of a cultural constant; 13.
