Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is aimed at the development of basic academic writing skills, argumentation and research strategies. In the frame of ESAP track it is designed to fine-tune productive skills (writing and public speaking) on the basis of academic sources. The course will prepare students for future research projects in HSE (project-based learning techniques) and effective oral and written communication in a formal context of their future careers. Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to write academic essays in different fields of language and literature studies (250-300, 500, 1000 words). The most motivated students will be able to try out their new developed skills in a small-scale research project and publish their short articles online (e.g., Research gate) or take part in a best essay competition. The development of public speaking skills is assessed by individual public presentations at a mini-conference. There is also an opportunity for most talented and interested students to participate in university-level conferences.
Learning Objectives
- Целью дисциплины «Английский язык для специальных целей - 3» является формирование у студентов иноязычной коммуникативной компетенции не ниже уровня B2+ (по Общеевропейской шкале уровней CEFR http://www.cambridgeenglishteacher.org/what_is_this), а именно: лингвистической, социолингвистической, социокультурной, дискурсивной, стратегической, а также формирование академических навыков, необходимых для использования английского языка в учебной, научной, и профессиональной деятельности
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Знать и применять грамматические конструкции при восприятии текстов и при их создании (устно, письменно).
- Знать и применять лексику по общей тематике при восприятии текстов и при их создании (устно, письменно).
- Умеет воспринимать устную речь на слух (монолог, диалог), понимать общий смысл высказывания, и частные вопросы и вести конспект прослушанного
- Умеет построить письменное высказывание в жанре эссе опираясь на сформированную лексико-грамматическую базу по теме, критическое мышление, характеристики жанра
- Умеет построить устное высказывание (монолог, диалог) опираясь на сформированную лексико-грамматическую базу по теме, социокультурные аспекты ситуации общения
- Умеет читать, понимать общий смысл и частные аспекты текстов филологической тематики и применять различные стратегии чтения.
- Участвовать в проектной работе: умеет кратко суммировать основные положения выбранных текстовых источников (письменно и устно), представить результаты проекта в виде презентации (PPT файла и устного ответа), ответить на вопросы аудитории.

- Organizing your text. APA style. Citation (in-text referencing, the list of references). Plagiarism.

- Finalising the writing. Correcting, peer review, proofreading.

Assessment Elements
- Final essayOn the basis of the articles proposed by the teacher, the student builds a written statement in the genre of an academic essay
- Oral presentationStudent prepares a presentation on the topic agreed with the teacher, forms it in accordance with the established criteria in the form of a PPT file. The student then presents it at a mini-conference (the presentation includes an oral answer and answers to questions from the audience).
