This course is practically outlined, it is aimed at retaining phonetic, grammatical and lexical language skills gained by the students in the secondary school and at gaining additional linguistic, sociolinguistic and discourse skills essential for educational, research and professional activities.
The course syllabus covers a wide range of themes connected with most general academic activities and professional practice of a humanist which involves use of academic sources, critical thinking skills, incorporating research findings into essays, articles, developing presentations, enlarging the students’ vocabulary by words and phrases commonly used in academic English.
This is a bachelor degree course designed for the 1st year students of Philosophy, Cultural Studies and Oriental Studies Departments at National Research University “Higher School of Economics”. The prerequisites of the course presuppose level B1+ (Intermediate) according to the Common European Framework of Reference.
At the end of this course students are expected to take their final examination which covers the topics and skills included in the course and can be either oral or written upon the teachers’ decision.
