Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course gives an overview of how business intelligence technologies can support decision making across any number of business sectors. These technologies have had a profound impact on corporate strategy, performance, and competitiveness and broadly encompass decision support systems, business intelligence systems, and visual analytics. Lectures are organized around the business intelligence concepts, tools and applications, and online analytical processing for creating visualizations and dashboards, and for business performance management and descriptive analytics.
Learning Objectives
- Comprehensive overview of Business Intelligence (BI) systems architecture and use.
- Get students familiarized with the common problems various businesses solve by means of BI tools
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Ability to choose stack of BI instruments based on business requirements
- Able to actively participate in data processing pipelines and BI systems deployment
- Able to build integrated reports and dashboards
- Can formulate business requirements based on actual requestors’ needs
- Capable of setting and testing simple hypotheses
Course Contents
- Business Intelligence Systems overview. Names and programs available on the market.
- Business Analysts role. Example of analytical business tasks on different levels
- BI deployment projects. Common approaches and usual bottlenecks
- KPIs and their hierarchies. Business metrics and their prioritization
- Building reports and dashboards, visualization techniques
Assessment Elements
- ExamThe exam is conducted in the format of a project defense based on real data in small groups (4-5 people). Students are required to analyze data related to a company or a business process, process it, analyze it, formulate requirements for an online dashboard (metrics, dimensions, filters, details), build the online dashboard in a BI system, analyze the results, draw conclusions, and provide data-based recommendations for the company.

- Activity during the classes (participation in discussions)1 point for the class is given to the student who raised the hand and answered the question at least once during the class. Extra points can be given to a student for asking questions or providing extraordinary answers.
- Group projectThe task is to analyze a company or process, identify KPIs and build a KPI dashboard structure in Excel
