Nowadays there are a lot of Muslim organizations advocating return to the fundamental norms and traditional values of Islam. However, the activities of some of them, such as Somali al-Shabaab, could be called extremist and even terrorist. This paper sets out to examine a comprehensive understanding of Islamic radicalism as a socio-philosophical phenomenon, which has deep historical, cultural, religious and dogmatic roots. It also aims to reveal the genesis of Islamic radicalism in the major regions of Muslim world (particularly in Somalia), as well as its role in the global and regional geopolitics. The paper focuses on the steps of Islamization of Somalia, current state and prospects of development of the Islamic movements in this country in addition to reasons for its radicalization in modern times.
