Transformation of the Healtcare Market in Russia in the Face of Population Ageing
Bachelor’s programme
2014
This paper provides a step toward solving one of the key problems of modern Russia: government spending inefficiency. Along with the frivolous attitude of Russians to their own health, this problem leads to extremely low level of population health, which negatively affects the economic environment in the country. In order to improve the situation, nowadays authorities continue to pass healthcare system modernization programs, spending enormous resources. To improve the efficiency of such spending it is necessary to consider and to take into account the behavior of a key player in the healthcare market – people, who creates demand for medical services and pharmaceuticals. Today a number of factors change the demand of the population and a key is the process of ageing. The impact of this demographic transition on changing demands in the medical services and drugs market was analyzed using data from 21 Wave of RLMS. The main results are the following: in the future population ageing will contribute to growth in the drugs consumption by Russians, primarily because of rising demand for pharmaceuticals for the treatment of diseases inherent in the elderly. In addition, the increasing proportion of older people in the total population will lead to an increase in the number of patients who require inpatient and outpatient care, as well as emergency care. These results can be useful during the adjustment of healthcare system development programs. 89162416013 grachev.denis.1955@yandex.ru
