“The Industrialization of Humoristic Genres on the Russian Television”

Student: Ekaterina Kitaeva

Supervisor: Ilya Kiriya

Faculty: Faculty of Media Communications

Educational Programme: Master

Year of Graduation: 2014

For my graduation paper I have chosen the theme “The Industrialization of Humoristic Genres on the Russian Television”. The chief aim of my research paper is to determine the characteristics of the commercialization and industrialization of humor on Russian television, as well as the designation of the borders of the division of labor between the script writers and producers. With relation to the chief aim the principal research tasks are following: to identify the criteria which determine industrialization and commercialization of the comic genre on TV; to develop the system of assessment of the industrialization humor on Russian TV; to use of deep-structured interviews as a tool of confirmation or refutation of the hypotheses. The author of the graduation paper puts forward one basic hypothesis: “From craft constructed on the principles of speeches broadcasted on TV, humor has become a kind of content, which the production industrialized at all steps: from designing creative ideas before the performance”. The methods of research are following: theoretical: comparative analysis of scientific literature on the theory of industrialization culture, industry content and television business; deep-structured interviews; analysis of the database of TNS Russia in relation to entertainment content of TNT channel, in particular to projects of the Comedy Club Production Company; the analysis of the database of SPARK in relation to the financial part of the business of Comedy Club Production Company. The empirical base is the data of the research company TNS Russia and the database of the company SPARK in relation to the financial information Comedy Club Production Company.

According to the obtained knowledge and the practice background of the deep-structured interviews and the database of TV viewing of the program of the Comedy Club Production and financial information (revenues, net income and cost of Comedy Club Company) the main conclusions are the following. First, there is the exclusive principle of the operation of production with the creative staff at the first stage of creation of content: the relationship between actors and writers are regulated by the hard agreement under which they have no right to cooperate with other channels, screenwriter always signs point in the agreement on alienation of exclusive rights. Secondly, the work of TV channels and TV production companies built on the "concepts": television companies have a majority stake in TV production companies. TNT channel owns Comedy Club Production, the CTC channel works on the exclusive principal with Yellow, Black and White Company. Thirdly, KVN was the original Russian TV format and national television ideas. It turned into such an institution, where the future employees are growing for Comedy Club Production and the whole entertainment content. In turn that the Comedy Club Production is the next television Institute after KVN. Conducted deep-structured interviews with representatives of the television industry has helped to prove working hypothesis.
