One of the distinguishing features of the twentieth century was rapidly developed mass media which played a significant role in the people’s everyday live. During the wars, and especially the WWII, there was a separate ideological front where we can reveal diverse directions. One of the main directions related to the design of the enemy’s image. But there was a course in the propaganda of the belligerent powers which was ignored for a while – reference to a heroic past. It especially refers to the USSR where there was not the history as a subject in schools for a while. The beginning of the Great Patriotic War gave a stimulus the new direction in the Soviet propaganda.

During the Second World War, Napoleon was often compared with Hitler, especially in relation to his foreign policy. This paper based mainly on the periodicals demonstrates how the image of the Napoleonic wars was used in the propaganda of the main powers involved in the conflict. In addition to the periodicals the author used the documents from different archives: Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History, Central archive of social and political history of Moscow and Freiburg Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv what allowed to look at this question more deeply and in details.

Though this issue has been extensively discussed, less consideration has been given to the comparison of various contexts in which this historical subject was used. As it turned out all examined countries interpreted the historical events connected with Napoleon for their own purposes.

The paper is illustrated with pictures from the Soviet, German and American periodicals and with “TASS Windows” posters which explain main directions of using historical subjects in the propaganda by visual demonstration.
