Applying project management approach in sport industry organizations within the framework of major international sport events

<p>The following study is dedicated to the issue of applying project management approach in sport industry organizations within the framework of major international sport events. This theme was chosen because of &nbsp;&nbsp;forthcoming international sport projects that will take place in Russian Federation:&nbsp; Hockey World Championship 2016 in Moscow and St. Petersburg and FIFA World Cup 2018. Also Sochi 2014 Olympic Games that took place give us a great opportunity to analyze the practice of implementation such major and complicated project in Russia.</p><p>The key problem of applying project approach while organizing major international sport events is the uncertainty of final result. In order to solve this problem the main aim of this study was formulated as analyzing projects and project oriented organizations in sport industry for further development of some recommendations that will help to improve same activities in the future.</p><p>During the study were analyzed sport industry features, their impact on projects and companies. The research also included the analysis of organizations that are responsible for preparation major international sport events on the example of Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee and further development of recommendations for applying project approach for the process of preparation major international sport events.</p><p>Theoretical part of the study allowed to identify specific features of sport industry, analyze their impact on business processes, to highlight project areas that are influenced by industry specifics the most. This leaded to the conclusion that project approach methods must be adapted, especially in cost, scope, time and quality areas.</p><p>The analysis of project oriented organizations in sport industry helped to identify project areas that must be optimized to suit industry features and specifics of major international sport projects. Afterwards the planning model for projects providing services for major sport events clients was developed. This model helps to plan such projects taking into account service priorities, resource constraints and amount of benefits.&nbsp;</p><p>The experience of work in Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee allowed receiving additional data about best practices implemented in such organizations, including the area of cost management. This information was used during development of recommendations for improving performance of such organizations.</p><p>The identified specific characteristics of sport industry, the analysis of their impact on organizations and projects, designed model for service projects for clients, adopted project approach and recommendations for cost and scope management during major international sport projects can be defined as the key outcomes of the current study.</p>
