This Bachelor’s Thesis, the subject of which is “Secondary Employment”, is intended to cover the major issues of secondary employment, which is one of the spheres in labor economics, and is devoted to studying this phenomenon. This research describes changes in Russian society in the period of 2008-2012 which happened in the labor market especially in the secondary labor market. It is an attempt to determine the reasons for secondary employment by analyzing social structure, testing some hypothesis and evaluating the influence of different factors on the decision to take up secondary employment. The findings appear of the evidence of significant relationships between the necessity of the extra job and the current social, demographic and economic conditions in the country and the status of the person in the society.

The problem of secondary employment is relevant in most countries, and this fact is confirmed by a large number of researches. While the debate over this topic has long interested professionals, some vital aspects are not omitted or accomplished. The reason for the situation could be explained in the following way. First of all, the changes in different social processes become a reason for the variety of motives, which determine the person’s decision to take up an extra job. These motives include some social and demographic factors such as sex, age, education, family status, children’s availability, profession and etc. Moreover, there are also economic factors, which have an influence on this decision. As the main points an amount of salary on the main job place, a total family income, a number of hours on the first job place and etc. could be mentioned.

Due to foresaid, the main goal of the research is to analyze the current situation in the secondary labour market and to indentify factors and causes of secondary employment in Russia.

To achieve this it is vital to make theoretical and empirical analysis of supply of the workforce on the secondary labor market, to indentify factors and causes of secondary employment in Russia, to make a comparative analysis of the data with other countries.

The problem of secondary employment is researched by authors from Russia and foreign countries. Although the most papers present the same problem, they have differences. One of the main differences in these studies is the definition of the concept of secondary employment.

Some researchers (Klopov, 1997; Popova, 2002) formulate the definition of secondary employment as an extra work. It means that it also includes working activity of pensioners, students or unemployed. As opposite view is other scholars (Roschin S. Y., Razumova T. O, 2002), who restrict this term to a more specific field. They comprehend secondary employment as an extra job when a person already has the firsthand source of income.

As the causes of the secondary employment the following points could be identified. If the secondary employment is defined as the second permanent work place, it primarily depends on the level of education and the saturation of labor market. On the contrary, the secondary employment, as additional earnings, depends on the financial factors, individual and family needs and opportunities, the condition of the regional labor market. Nevertheless, some general ideas are deduced, but some of them need to be reconsidered because of variability of the social process, which entails changes in reasons for the secondary employment.

Findings, which were made during the research, are generally in line with the current tendency of economical development, demographic situation and social preferences. Moreover some of them coincide with conclusions of other researchers that demonstrate the absence of sweeping changes in society. People rely on the traditional sources of revenue such as income from primary and secondary employment, transfers from family partners, social benefits, the produce of their garden plots and etc. Practically the results of the current investigation characterize economic development and quality of life.
