Assessment of Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been researched from multiple, hardly compatible perspectives. Experts stress that the impacts across the regions will be very diverse, even for the same industry. To make real forecast it is worth to analyze separately every region. The main aim of research is to identify the most effective methods of assessment and to investigate the positive and negative economic consequences of Russia’s accession to the WTO in Nizhegorodskaya oblast. The thesis is divided into three parts. First of all, I describe a basis and structure of the WTO, identify the general consequences of Russia’s accession as well as opinions and comments of experts. Secondly, I analyze the methods of assessment of the effects of accession. Thirdly, I carry out the analysis of foreign trade of Nizhegorodskaya oblast. The main results of my work is that export intensive sectors, such as ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, chemicals and timber, wood, pulp and paper products are the sectors that expand the most as a result of WTO accession. However, some of the sectors that were most protected prior to the tariff reduction and which have a relatively small share of exports will lose out, e.g. production of machinery, equipment and construction materials, as well as the food and light industries.
