Development of a typology of business models russian electric power generation companies

Liberalization of the electricity industry in Russia and the introduction of competitive mechanisms in the manufacturing sector (generation) of electricity and heat generation are forced companies to seek ways to improve their own efficiency. One of the possible ways to improve efficiency is the use of more efficient business models. But energy companies can not change their current business model to a more productive, while managers of energy companies do not understand their current business model. Therefore, we first need to understand what are the business models generating companies. It identify different types of business models and dedicated master's thesis.The purpose of the master's thesis - a typology of business models Russian electricity generating companies.In the theoretical part of the work discussed in detail issues related to the concept of business model: definition, evolution, classification, communication strategy, etc. Have been proposed and justified their own approaches to the evolution of the concept of the business model and classification of business models and justified the choice of approach to building business models for Slywotzky for the purposes of this study.In the practical part of the work was modified business model Slywotzky considered to cover the specifics of the industry. Applying the resulting modified template business model, were divided into 3 types of business models, typical for Russian electricity generating companies:• Type of business model "Energy Holding" is a major energy company, which is characterized by partial vertical integration and related business diversification.• Type of business model "Regional Energy Company" is a small company that specializes only in the production of electricity and heat in the regions of Russia.• Type of business models "Foreign Energy Company" is a power company, owned by foreign investors, which also specializes only in the production of electricity and heat, but its management is performed from Moscow.To assess the effectiveness of the resulting types of business models, a tool was developed performance evaluation, which included four financial indicators and 3 technical indicator. After calculating all the parameters for each type of business model has been found that the most effective type of business model is a "foreign power company", and the least productive type - "Regional Energy Company."To identify competitive advantages of generating companies with different types of business models, has been used value chain. According to the analysis of the value chain, it was found that the type of business model "Foreign Energy Company" has a competitive advantage in the production of electricity and heat and qualified management, the type of business model "Energy Holding" has a competitive advantage in the energy retail business, and the type of business model "Regional energy company" has no competitive advantage.To improve the efficiency of generating companies with the types of business models "Energy Holding" and "regional power companies" main recommendation is to upgrade existing production assets or the construction of new generation. This will allow these companies to increase their competitiveness.
