Abstract

Graduate work on «Early warning signs in coal mining projects»

Key words: risk-management, crisis management, early warning signs, coal mining, project management.

Object of research:

Coal-mining project

Subject of the study:

Risks of coal-mining project

The purpose of the study:

The main aim of the study is to identify threats in coal-mining projects and generate an early warning system for most important risks. In addition, this work target is to formulate requirements for early warning signs, basing on previous researches in area, and adapt their results to Russian coal sector.

The study was conducted by analyzing the project documentation of risk management process. Questionnaire, based on risks identified and previous stage was handed out to project management team and members of project office. Research was aimed to identify most dangerous threats for projects. Study allows to analyze risk-management process in project and improve it with early warning system.

After the most significant risks have been identified, it became possible to create a system of early warning signs for them.

The relevance of this work is caused by the lack of work on this subject in the coal industry and the general lack of research on early warning signs in Russian literature. The present study opens up new area of research for improving the effectiveness of risk management.

Despite the fact, that early warning system should be designed individually for each project, one presented in this study can be used as a sample for developing warning systems for practical use both in coal-mining, and other areas.
