Educational Programme: Master

Year of Graduation: 2014

The research refers to the process of information system development model transition. The process itself acts as research object, while the subject of research refers to the problems which occur in this process.

Agile software development models seem to be very efficient when used in the environment of changing software requirements. But since risks of development model transition appear to be rather high, the study becomes especially relevant.

The research is conducted under the following restrictions:

·         only commercial development projects are considered, government contracts are out of scope of the study;

·         only problems occurring in Russian companies are considered;

·         only open sources of data are used;

· required statistical data for the study is collected only from open sources – no experiments are implemented.

The purpose of research refers to development of methods, which would help to reduce the risk of transition to agile development. The study assumes the following tasks:

·         existing development models and information system lifecycles review;

·         data collection on problems arising while changing the development model and the methods used to solve them;

·         collected problems analysis in order to identify their consequences and choose preferred solutions;

·         problems investigation in order to determine their root causes and develop a solution for them;

·         research results aggregation into the methods of transition to agile development;

· identification of effectiveness evaluation approach for the developed methods.

The first chapter of the study refers to description and analysis of existing information system lifecycle models which contain some development model, as well as analysis of their advantages and disadvantages.

The second chapter contains the list of problems identified in available agile development transition projects. Their consequences and applied solutions are also analyzed in this chapter.

In the third chapter identification of the root causes of problems is conducted and the synthesis of solutions is carried out. In addition, the third chapter contains observations of the real process of software development model transition, conducted during the research. Also a brief description of the developed is given in this chapter.

The last chapter contains approach to efficiency assessment for the proposed methods of software development model transition. The methods efficiency formula is described and an example of development model effect assessment approach is given.

The result of research refers to the methods of information system development model transition.
