The Organizational Structure and Industry's Particularities Correspondence (the Case of the Media Company)

The theme of this work is The Organizational Structure and Industry's Particularities Correspondence (the Case of the Media Company). This work may be interesting for media companies’ managers and managers involved in the design of the organizational structure.The aim of this work is to develop a set of recommendations to change company «N»’s organizational structure. It is based on correspondence analysis of company «N»’s organizational structure and peculiarities of Russian media industry.The object of the research is company «N», which operates in Russian media industry in the segment of video content.The subject of research is the interrelation between the organizational structure of a company and characteristics of the industry in which it operates.To fulfill this goal it is necessary to achieve the following objectives:• To systematize information about the organizational structure design approaches• To summarize the theoretical concept of the industry analysis.• To describe company «N»’s performance.• To analyze the organizational structure of the company «N».• To identify the features of Russian media industry.• To perform the analysis of the consistency of company «N»‘s organizational structure and peculiarities of Russian media industry.• To develop recommendations for company «N» to change the organizational structure in accordance with the features of the media industry.As a methodological framework for analyzing the structure of company «N» author uses the concept of "five configurations of the organizational structure" by G. Mintsberg. The analysis of company «N»‘s organizational structure is based on information obtained during an interview with the CEO, as well as data from internal materials, which indicate company’s performance.The following methods of analysis were used to analyze Russian media industry: selection of key success factors of the industry, staging industry life cycle, competitive analysis "five forces" by M.Porter, as well as identifying strategic groups. Information was obtained from recent studies of Russian media industry held by PWC, Deloitte and J'sons & Partners Consulting. Also three expert interviews were conducted, where the respondents were CEO, executive producer and senior producer.In the final chapter, the author identifies the number of characteristics of company «N»’s organizational structure and also highlights the main features of Russian media industry. The author concludes that company «N»’s organizational structure does not match the peculiarities of Russian media industry. The result of the work is a list of recommendations to change company «N»’s organizational structure. A scheme of suitable organizational structure is developed, as recommended, to match features of Russian media industry.
