Abstract. Study on the relationship between motivation and the degree of involvement of young people in volunteering.

At present, non-profit organizations are in constant search for methods to improve their marketing strategies in order to attract one of their most important resources -volunteers. This thesis aims to identify the patterns of young volunteers. This will help NGOs improve the efficiency of their marketing campaigns aimed at volunteers.

The aim of this thesis is to identify the relationship between motivation and the degree of involvement of young people in doing volunteer work. Subject matter of the study was young volunteers between 16-27 years old, current or former students of Higher School of Economics, Moscow. Scope of the thesis was motivation and the degree of involvement into volunteering. As the indicators of involvement such factors were used as the frequency of participation, the number of donated time and type of activity performed in the non-profit organizations. Data was gathered by the exploratory study, which consisted of an online survey of young volunteers. Methods of data analysis included factor analysis, steam Pearson correlation, contingency tables, chi-square comparison of means, t-test for independent variables, etc.

The outcome of the study are the following: Firstly, six groups of motives influencing the decision of young people to join the volunteer activities were identified: access to information / social relationships, self-actualization, development of skills / career, important person, altruistic / religious motives and process motives. The most common of these motives among young people are self-actualization, access to information / social contacts and process motives. Secondly, the correlation between the frequency of participation of volunteers and type of motivation was found. It turned out that two of the three most popular motives (career development / skills and self-actualization) has a consequence the greatest frequency of participation. Thirdly, with the help of this study, it was found that there is a direct correlation between the frequency of participation in volunteering and the number of hours devoted to the organization in the last month. According to the survey NGOs should expect an average of 27 hours of volunteer work by young people monthly. It should be noted that young people with the motivation of important person devote on average much lower amount of time to non-profit organizations that people with other motivations do.

Fourthly, it has been proven that young people combining work and study show higher levels of volunteering frequency than people with only one type of activity: studies or work.

Another result of this work was the discovery that people with certain motivation are inclined to a certain types of activity in non-profit organizations. People with the process motivation are more likely to be engaged in such activity as collecting information / e-mail analysis/ phone calls receiving. Young volunteers with the motivation to access information / social contacts are more prone to such activities as grooming for the sick in the hospital or at home than volunteers with other types of motivation. Other types of activities have almost the same probability to be done by volunteers of all types of motivations.
