Managing risks of the “Yamal LNG” project

<p>In this graduation paper the risk management process of the &ldquo;Yamal LNG&rdquo;, large-scale project undertaken by Novatek will be investigated. &ldquo;Yamal LNG&rdquo; is a proposed liquefied natural gas plant at Sabetta, north-east of the Yamal Peninsula. The main purpose of this research is to observe and analyze methods of managing risks of this project and to work out and evaluate the effectiveness of risk management activities.</p><p>The work consists of the introduction, three parts, the conclusion and the list of the literature. In the first part the process of risk management in the field of oil-and-gas production is examined. In the second one the process of managing &ldquo;Yamal LNG&rdquo; project risks is studied. In the third chapter the effectiveness of risk management activities is worked out and evaluated.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The graduation paper is based on research made by domestic and foreign authors in the field of project risk management, features of the oil and gas industry, LNG technology and risk management of oil and gas projects. Both empirical and theoretical methods of research were applied in this paper. Also specific methods of analysis and economic-mathematical models were used, all calculations were made using MS Excel 2010.</p><p>The following main results were obtained:</p><p>1) The scientific base related to risk management, especially concerning the oil and gas industry was investigated. The basic standards and approaches to the project risk management were examined, as well as projects in the oil and gas industry, their risks and key features were described;</p><p>2) Project risks were identified and assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. Risk identification was carried out by interviewing experts and analyzing the RBS. Qualitative evaluation was carried out by the usage of expert methods and quantitative evaluation was made after using scenario analysis and decision tree analysis;</p><p>3) Activities aimed at project risk reduction were developed on the basis of adopted rules and recommendations in the organization;</p><p>4) Ranked list of project risks was created, which includes all identified risks and their consequences, risk assessment and description of actions aimed at risk reduction;</p><p>5) Recommendations for monitoring risks were developed, they based on the adopted rules concerning risk management in the organization and features of the &ldquo;Yamal LNG&rdquo; project;</p><p>6) Organizational chart for risk management was developed on the basis of the existing corporate management in the organization;</p><p>7) The effect from the implementation of the recommendations concerning risk management was determined. Implementation of the described risk management process of the &ldquo;Yamal LNG&rdquo; project the organization will achieve the following results:</p><p style="margin-left: 35.45pt;">&bull; The increase in the probability of achieving the objectives of the company;</p><p style="margin-left: 35.45pt;">&bull; The increase in the return on investment;</p><p style="margin-left: 35.45pt;">&bull; Improved control of the projects;</p><p style="margin-left: 35.45pt;">&bull; Savings on cost reduction that could occur because of a lack of risk management;</p><p style="margin-left: 35.45pt;">&bull; Increased certainty in the implementation of projects.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
