Psychophysical determinants of variety perception.
Faculty of Psychology
The paper describes four psychophysical experiments focusin on which physical characteristics of multiple objects (ensembles) affect the subjective perception of variety ("variety sense"). We found in the result that a set of psychophysical determinants affecting variety percepyion can be reduced to the statistical concept of variance. Note that true physical varity of individual features (heterogeneity) does not affect subjective variety perception. The results fit a contemporary approach to understanding the perception of multiple objects, the theory of ensemble statistical representation.
