The development of historical studies in the latter half of the 20th century was complemented not only by reimagining the very essence and purpose of the studies proper, but also by exploring new ways of presentation of accumulated historical knowledge. In the end of the 20th century sociologists, antropologists, historians and art experts started talking about the "visual turn" (iconic, pictoral) in social and human knowledge that came after the linguistic turn. New complexes of visual sources were introduced for scientific use, creating the need for new research techniques and approaches. The visual turn was bound to have its effect on education. The main challenges it brings up before the modern historical education are correlation of verbal and visual knowledge and differentiation between scientific and educational knowledge. This study is a theoretical exploration of challenges that arise upon trying to define such notions as "visuality", "imagery" and "visualization" in studies and education, the methods of scientific study of visual sources, as well as the problems they face both in research and in adaptation for use in school education.
