This paper studies the development of Russia – India energy relations, starting from the Soviet period and until the present. Indian energy market has been rapidly growing during the recent years, and this tendency is more than likely to continue, which turns India into a preferential trading partner for biggest global energy sources suppliers. In the frame of realism and comparative advantages theories, the paper studies Russian and Indian grounds and tendencies for hydrocarbons and nuclear trade development. The researcher also observes the main Indian projects and transactions with other suppliers, such as OPEC and GECF members, along with main nuclear power suppliers and determines the competitive advantages of the Russian Federation in comparison to other international suppliers. The findings indicate that the existence of other global suppliers on Indian market along with growing competition represents certain difficulties for Russia – India relationships. Though, deepening the cooperation in certain industries can bring strong benefits to both countries.
