Analysis of the Effectiveness of Mergers and Acquisitions to American Acquirers in Banking Sector

In this paper the effect of Mergers and Acquisitions deals, on example of 60 American banks, involved in those deals since January 2004 up to June 2011, is being analysed. The research was conducted based on the two most popular methodologies, namely, event study and accounting study. Despite the fact that there are lots of papers on this topic, there is still no consesnsus on the effect of such deals on the acquirer. We have chosen American banks as American financial system is still the most effective one in the world. The results of our study have shown that M&A deals have a negative influence on banks-acquirers from the perspective of event study and accounting study both.
